How to Choose a Finish for a Feature Wall

A feature wall does not always need a bold colour or strong pattern. The right texture can add interest while keeping the rest of the room simple.

Start With the Room, Not the Trend

A feature wall is often one of the first things people notice when entering a room. That does not mean it needs to be the loudest element.

A well-chosen wall finish can add texture and variation while still working with the furniture, flooring and lighting already in the room.

Look at the Size of the Wall

Large walls can handle finishes with more visible texture or movement. On smaller walls, a subtle finish may work better and prevent the space from feeling visually busy.

Consider the Natural Light

Light changes how texture appears.

A wall receiving direct daylight may show more variation than the same finish in a darker room. Before choosing a finish, consider how the wall looks at different times of the day.

Think About What Is Already in the Room

Look at the flooring, furniture, curtains and other finishes already present.

If the room already has strong patterns or colours, a quieter wall finish may be the better choice. In a simpler room, a textured finish can provide the visual interest that is missing.

Choose Texture With a Purpose

Different finishes create different impressions.

A Concrete Finish can give a space a more architectural feel.

A Travertine Finish can bring a stone-inspired appearance to the wall.

A Matt Stucco finish works well when you want something soft and understated.

A Metallic Texture can be used where a more noticeable reflective effect is appropriate.

Don't Forget the Rest of the Walls

A feature wall should work with the surrounding walls rather than compete with them. Sometimes the best result comes from using a stronger finish on one wall and keeping the remaining surfaces simple.

Make the Decision From a Sample

Photographs are useful for getting ideas, but they cannot always show the exact texture or colour variation.

Before finalising a feature wall, look at the actual finish and consider it in the room's lighting.

At ClayTex, we help clients compare finishes and choose an option that fits the space rather than simply following a current design trend.
