A decorative finish depends on more than the material itself. Before application begins, the condition of the wall, moisture, existing paint and surface preparation all need to be checked.
Before the Finish Goes On
Decorative wall finishes can highlight the character of a wall, but they can also make existing surface problems more noticeable. That is why preparation should happen before thinking about the final texture or colour.
Here are five things worth checking.
1. Check the Existing Surface
Look for cracks, loose paint, uneven areas, holes or previous repair work. Small imperfections may become visible once a new decorative finish is applied.
The wall should be assessed before the application begins.
2. Look for Moisture Problems
Dampness or water seepage should be addressed before applying a decorative finish. Covering a moisture problem without fixing its source can lead to further damage later.
If there is visible dampness, it is better to resolve the underlying issue first.
3. Don't Skip Surface Preparation
Cleaning, repairing, sanding and priming may not be the most visible part of the process, but they have a direct effect on the final result.
A properly prepared surface gives the finish a more consistent base to work with.
4. Consider the Lighting
The same finish can appear different under daylight, warm artificial lighting and cool lighting. If the wall receives strong natural light, texture and tonal variation may also appear more pronounced.
Always consider the actual room rather than choosing a finish from an isolated sample image.
5. Decide the Finish Before Starting
Different finishes require different application methods and preparation. Decide whether you want a soft mineral look, a stronger texture, a stone-inspired appearance or something more understated before work begins.
Good Finishes Start With Good Preparation
The final appearance is not only about how the material is applied. The condition of the wall underneath matters too.
At ClayTex, we assess the surface before application and determine what preparation is needed for the selected finish.
